Keys Energy Services imports the majority of its power supply from mainland
Florida. Keys Energy Services is a member of the Florida Municipal Power
Agency's (FMPA) All-Requirements project. As a member of FMPA, Keys Energy
Services pools its generating facilities and its power supply requirements
with 14 other municipal utilities in the state. Together the 15 utilities
are able to keep costs down for customers.
Though
most power is imported, the Utility Board adopted a 60 percent on-island,
backup generation policy to ensure reliability. Because Keys Energy Services
is dependent on a radial transmission line that can and does go down,
the need for local generation is paramount.
If
the transmission line is not operable, KEYS' crews fire up local generation
and supply up to 60 percent of the area's peak power requirements. If
customers exercise conservation measures, local generation can supply
the power demand.
